We still receive more than 100 emails
a day asking us about the video files. Let me give you the status:
a - We tried to serve the videos from
our regular servers. Each video created as much bandwidth as
12 photo contributions and our backlog started to grow like hell.
b - We received around 15 video contris
a day. Publishing all of them every day would require twice the
bandwidth that we already use (only for videos) and we already
use more than 150 Megs/sec.
c - We started a survey and 48% of
the voyeurwebbers voted for a dedicated AVI site, which would
charge 1 US$ a month. (20% didnt care about videos, 15% would
pay more and the others would never pay anything).
d - We decided to start a dedicated
MPG site and charge US$ 9.99 for 10 months (redclouders may even
pay less)
e - We wanted to start the video site
on Sept 15th. But Voyeurweb, RedClouds and Watchcams grew faster
than expected and we assigned the new bandwidth to those sites
instead of using it for the MPG site. At the same time, we decided
to add more Network Operation Centers. For example a mirror site
in Europe. Those new network centers mean a complete new network
architure for all our sites
f - Since 1st Oct we are working on
the new architecture. We still dont have the new lines
up in Europe and we still experience tech problems.
g - As it looks right now, we will
be able to start the new Video site the 1st week of December.
Please understand, that adding a new
traffic monster to our existing infrastructure is not like adding
a little server to a rack. We talk about more than 20 new servers
here, spread all over this planet. We cannot start the new service
(and charge for it, even if its only a buck for a month), before
we are 99.99% sure, that we will be able to deliver what we charge
you for. So please give us the time we need to create a new and
reliable service - it will be worth it.
Thanks and a nice weekend
Igor
